Travel Diary of the Bund in Shanghai

The Bund is located on the banks of the Huangpu River in Huangpu District, central Shanghai, that is, Waihuangpu Beach. Since 1844 (the 24th year of Qing Daoguang), this area has been classified as a British concession, which has become a true portrayal of Shanghai’s Shiliyangchang. It is also the starting point for the old Shanghai Concession area and the entire modern city of Shanghai.

The Bund starts from Yan’an East Road in the south and Waibaidu Bridge in the north. On the west side of this 1.5-kilometer-long section of the Bund, 52 classical revival buildings with different styles stand. It is known as the Bund World Architecture Expo Group. It has become the financial center of the old Shanghai period and the concentration zone of foreign trade institutions. It has always been regarded as an iconic building in Shanghai and a symbol of the city’s history.

150 years ago, when the colonists set foot on this strange land in Shanghai, they took a fancy to this stretch of the Huangpu River. As a result, this fiber road, which was once stepped out by boatmen and hard workers, has been built for more than 100 years, with high-rise buildings and heavy traffic. These buildings where classicism and modernism coexist have become symbols of Shanghai.

The Bund once housed a great number of banks and trading houses from Britain, France, USA, Russia, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands and Belgium. Other foreign companies were also located in this area. Therefore, The Bund features a great number of buildings in different architectural styles, including Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Neo-Classical and so on. The HSBC Building, Union Building, Bank of China are just to name a few of those buildings along The Bund. Today, The Bund also features many luxurious shops and shopping stores, such as Armani, Hugo Boss, Zegna and so on around this area. The Bund is one of the must-go attractions for tourists’ Shanghai travel experience. Surrounding scenic spots: Huangpu River, riverside, Bund 3, Bund 18. To reach The Bund, tourists can take Shanghai Metro Line 2 and get off at Nanjing Road(E.) Station, and walk along Nanjing Road for about 5 minutes.
