China’s expanded transit visa exemption policies have significantly driven the surge in inbound tourism, with international visitors increasingly choosing China as a top travel destination.

Recently, American internet sensation IShowSpeed, known as “甲亢哥” (Hyperthyroidism Brother) in China, concluded his first trip to the country and posted on social media: “Thank you, China!” alongside photos from his travels.

With over 37 million followers globally, the top influencer visited Shanghai, Beijing, Henan, Sichuan, and other regions in March. In Shanghai, he livestreamed for six hours from landmarks like the Bund, Nanjing Road, and People’s Square, attracting 5.6 million viewers and tens of thousands of comments. His broadcasts highlighted China’s openness, technological achievements, and cultural heritage. In Beijing, he explored the Forbidden City and the Great Wall while wearing a vibrant northeastern Chinese floral-patterned jacket, repeatedly exclaiming, “Oh, my god!” A standout moment occurred at Beijing’s Huguo Temple Snack Street, where he famously pinched his nose while trying the pungent local specialty douzhi (fermented mung bean juice), instantly spawning viral memes.
IShowSpeed’s journey ignited a “China fever” across global social media, trending multiple times and earning him the nickname “unofficial cultural ambassador.” His adventures allowed netizens worldwide to “cloud-travel” through China, further fueling the booming trend of #ChinaTravel.
This reflects the impact of China’s recent visa facilitation policies on inbound tourism. On April 15, the National Immigration Administration reported that foreign entries via all ports reached 9.215 million in Q1 2024, up 40.2% year-on-year, with 71.3% (6.57 million) entering visa-free.
Since China expanded its transit visa exemption policy in December 2023, travelers from 54 countries can now enjoy a 240-hour visa-free transit. The policy now covers 60 ports and 24 provinces/municipalities, allowing cross-regional travel within China.
